UTV International announced the development of the Voyager D12, a Canadian-built articulated tracked carrier intended for personnel transport and remote operations in extreme terrain.
The platform was conceived as a modern Canadian alternative to legacy articulated carriers such as the Hägglunds BV206, which has supported military, Arctic, search-and-rescue and remote-access operations for decades.
Voyager was developed around several core requirements:
- Mobility across deep snow and soft ground
- Operation in muskeg, wetlands and remote terrain
- Amphibious capability
- Personnel and equipment transport
- Articulated steering
- Low ground pressure
- Extreme-climate operation
- Adaptable rear vehicle configurations
- Canadian manufacturing and lifecycle support
The announcement coincided with increasing attention on the future replacement of Canada's BV206 fleet. The federal Defence Investment Plan identified the Domestic Arctic Mobility Enhancement project as a future program to provide a new fleet of medium-sized, amphibious, high-mobility Arctic carriers.
UTV International developed Voyager as a Canadian response to this emerging requirement and to similar needs among allied militaries, public-safety organizations and remote operators.
Unlike a conventional wheeled vehicle, the Voyager's articulated two-car architecture is intended to maintain mobility across terrain where roads are unavailable and ground conditions vary significantly. The rear vehicle can also be adapted for personnel, cargo, medical, command, rescue and other mission requirements.
The 2018 announcement established the foundation for the continued development of the Voyager platform, including subsequent generations incorporating hybrid propulsion, exportable power, updated suspension and greater mission modularity.
